Whytes of Crossgar first opened its doors to the public in 1899 supplying households with all the many furnishings and appliances required throughout many turbulent times. The Whyte family business continued on until 1999 when George, the then, proprietor retired and sold the premises to Bobby Harper from Kinallen a wholesale furniture supplier. Bobby while new to the retail end of selling, brought with him a unique insight and vision gleaned from selling to many large and small furniture stores throughout Ireland.
His first aims were to expand the floor space throughout the premises and although restricted by laws pertaining to the history of the street major renovations were carried out adding new bedding and dining room showrooms. Due to the overwhelming success of the new improvements and an ever growing customer base, building work recommenced. Beginning with the redevelopment of waste ground at the rear of the premises a new safer entrance to the rear of the building was opened up allowing access for the many deliveries coming and going to the shop. Work continued on a new modern two storied showroom which was completed ahead of schedule. It was soon opened to the public, expanding the floor space throughout the shop to become one of the biggest retailing furniture shops in County Down.
Although drastic changes have been made, the shop still maintains its traditional look on the outside but has found a unique blend off modern styles of furniture, mixing them with the old. The owner has always instilled family traditions within the shop and his daughter Siobhan with 15 years experience in furniture has risen to manager with her husband Stephen filling in as assistant manager. They are complimented by a highly skilled sales team who are friendly and highly informative. New innovations such as a Website, Emailing, Facebook and the use of iPad's on the shop floor also adds to our modernization.
